Cull came late into the professional game, and by the time he signed for Stoke, he was already 24. He never established a regular place during his 6 seasons at the Victoria Ground. Cull scored on his City debut, but injury and the impressive form of Frank White, produced only sporadic performances.

Cull was released, aged 31, and rejoined non-league Shrewsbury, before reviving his Football League career.
