Bacon was a strong and robust forward, who was characterised by his short back and sides haircut and his venomous shooting. He was a reserve team player prior to his signing for Reading, and on the 3rd April 1931, he scored the club's record individual tally for a match - 6 against Stoke. A disappointing spell at Chesterfield was followed by him signing for City as cover for Clarrie Bourton. He got his chance through an injury to City's centre forward. His goals included five against Gillingham (City's equal highest individual total in a match), and four versus Crystal Palace - in consecutive matches. Unbelievably, after Bacon's tremendous displays, he was dropped to make way for Bourton.
He suffered an eye injury with City and moved onto Burton Town. He died in 1941 after an air raid on Derby, when he was serving as a special constable.
