The son of a Barnsley St Peters player of the carly 1890's, Woolhouse was recruited by Birmingham from the same Sheffield junior side that his father played for. He didn't make the first team in his 3 seasons at St. Andrew's.

He seemed unlikely to make the grade after being released by Southend having played only 2 games. His career was revitalised at Valley Parade and he was signed by Harry Storer for City. He played only 11 games for City, as a replacement for Percy Richards. He was allowed to move to Walsall and this slender winger was a fine servant for The Saddlers in his 5 years, scoring 47 goals in 204 appearances, which was an excellent return for a winger.
