Davison left the coalmine to join Durham City in their first Football League season, where he attracted the attention of Wolves. It wasn't until he joined Derby that he established himself as a top class centre half. George Jobey was the manager who signed him for both Wolves and Derby. It took some time to impress, but he played 30 games in Derby's League runners up side of 1929-30. He left for Hillsborough once future England international Jack Barker matured and in July 1932, signed for City. He played his part when City reversed the trend of conceding too many goals. As at Derby, Davison was ousted from City's centre half position by a rising star, George Mason. He signed for Rhyl Athletic as player coach.
