Just 2 months after buying Ted Watson from Wolves, James McIntyre raided the reserve side of the Molineux club again to acquire the services of Jimmy Baker. After irregular League appearances at Wolves, he became a regular choice for City, starting as a wing half, but switching to centre half with great effect. Despite making over 100 appearances in 3 seasons, he moved to his native Wales, playing for Lovell's Athletic - the works side for the well known confectionary company. Within 8 months, he returned to Highfield Road as the regular right half.
He remained first team choice, but Harry Storer was anxious to see Billy Frith progress. Baker was sold to Bristol City, but only played 11 times in 2 seasons, before being attracted to the newly formed Colchester United. He finally hung up his boots during the war.
