Big Geordie centre half Fred Simpson was signed in November 1930, and made his debut 2 months later in a reshuffled side that pushed centre half Jim Baker up front. Harry Storer gave him another chance in August 1932, but he was dropped after the side lost the first 2 games conceding 7 goals. City's strength in depth led to his his future appearances out of position - at right half - and he was released in 1933.
