After 2 spells as a City player Carsley was appointed coach of Coventry City’s U18 team after being released from his playing contract. He led them to runners-up spot in the Premier Academy League and was promoted to coach the Development Squad and assist with the club’s first team in May 2012.

When Mark Robins resigned to join Huddersfield, Carsley was appointed caretaker boss and was in charge for five games until Steven Pressley was appointed. He oversaw two home defeats (Crewe & Swindon) and two away wins (Bury & Bournemouth).
