Plunkett was a footballing nomad, never staying too long at any club. His longest spell at a club was 3 years at Bury, his first club, where he failed to gain a first team place. He played 15 times for QPR, before being released. He was later signed by James Mcintyre for City and played inconsistently, frequently becoming the subject of the crowd's barracking. He lost his place to Ted Watson and was sold to Crystal Palace. His only other League appearances were with Rochdale, where he played 18 games in 18 months.
