Howell seemed to have made the perfect start when he scored on his debut in the vital victory over Wolves in February 1921, as City tried to escape the relegation zone in the club's second season in the League. He played just 3 more matches, and was overlooked in the season's end in favour of experienced Sammy Stevens.
