Brown was one of the few successful Scottish signings made by James Kerr in the stormy days of the mid 1920's. It took 12 months before Brown proved himself, but he was a regular in the 1926-27 season, City's first season in Division 3 (South). He was signed by Major Frank Buckley for Wolves, the "Iron Major" not having money to spend bought players with talent and tried to mould them to his system. Brown played 34 times for the 2nd Division club, but didn't fit into the system, so moved to Norwich, before dropping the professional game and playing for the Boulton & Paul works club in the city. He spent the rest of his life in Norwich.
