After selling Reg Matthews, City were without any experienced goalkeeper. Ashcroft was considered an appropriate short-term option having made 89 appearances for Liverpool in the early 1950s and won an England B cap before joining City in 1957 via Ipswich. He had previously broken an arm, which had not healed properly. Consequently, City signed a goalkeeper who couldn't straighten his arm! Replacing the famous Reg Matthews proved to be a difficult task especially during one of the club’s worst post-war seasons and he was released soon after City slid into Division Four and rejoined his home town club.
