Billy Frith signed the slight right-winger from Derby County in November 1957 in an effort to drag the club up the old Third Division South before the reorganisation at the end of the season. The Derbyshire-born player had made an name for himself at Chesterfield and Mansfield and was only at the Baseball Ground for a few months before Frith signed him. He scored two goals in his first four games and proved to be a good crosser of the ball but a disastrous run of 13 games without a win left the team struggling in the lower reaches of the table. Smith lost his place to Peter Hill the following season and joined Kidderminster Harriers in the summer of 1959. His whereabouts since then are unknown.
