The son of a former Southampton full-back, Harry, a wing half, made his debut in April 1938. Although he played only five games before war broke out he was a cornerstone of the side during the war and a virtual ever-present for the first five post-war seasons. He captained the side on numerous occasions and a versatile player who played in nine different positions for the club including emergency goalkeeper. After retiring with a knee injury he managed Rugby Town and Snowdown Colliery where he groomed George Curtis and recommended him to Coventry. Later he returned to City as chief scout and subsequently managed Gillingham and Tunbridge Wells as well as being National Coach for the British Crown Green Bowls Association.Â
