Jack was brought up in the North East, eventually joining Everton, where he was a more than useful reserve. He was signed by Scott-Walford for Coventry, having already played for him at Leeds City. During the 1914-15 season, Jack was a prolific scorer. He scored in 5 successive games - it would have been six, but the game against Mardy was expunged. He also contributed 3 hat-tricks, a fourth against Abertillery was discounted when their record was expunged.
