Hale spent six years at Newcastle United without becoming a regular first teamer and in December 1962 Jimmy Hill paid £10,000 to bring him to Coventry. A short, blond, stocky schemer, he was a regular in the City team which won the Third Division championship in 1964 and in 3 ½ years at Highfield Road scored 33 goals in 111 appearances.
In early 1966 he lost his place to Ray Pointer and joined Oxford United for £5,000 where he helped them to promotion in 1968 alongside Ron Atkinson. He later played for Darlington and Halifax and was manager of Hartlepool between 1974 and 1976. He lived in Sunderland for many years and ran a newsagent in the town for many years and also worked for the NHS in the medical records department. He has fond memories of the team at Coventry and says, “Had George Hudson blossomed a couple of years earlier he would have made it in Division 1, he was such a talented player”.
