As far as British fans are concerned Mifsud is probably the most famous Maltese footballer of alltime. He made his name in his own country as a teenager playing for Sliema Wanderers and he won his first international cap in 2000. Soon afterwards he joined German club Kaiserslautern but struggled to gain a first team place and in 2003 was back in Malta with Sliema. Norwegian club Lillestrom signed him in 2004 and he set the Norwegian league alight with 17 goals in 48 league games. City wante to sign him in the summer of 2006 but Lillestrom resisted despite him being out of contract a few months later. Micky Adams finally landed his man in January 2007 but was sacked a few days later. Mifsud impressed City fans from the start with his pace and he scored four goals in 2006-07 season including the goal of the season at Hillsborough.
The diminutive striker made a massive impression in the first half of last season and in early December led the Championship’s scoring lists with 13 league and cup goals from only 13 starts. His goals included four braces including both goals in the League Cup win at Old Trafford. His speed was his main weapon and he caused palpitations for several Championship defences notably Stoke and West Brom and his finishing was devastating. Then the goals dried up, especially in the league where he went 25 games without finding the net before scoring in the final game at Charlton. He did continue to score in the Cup, netting twice at Blackburn including a stunning fourth (and winning the Player of the Round award) and against Millwall. In the home league game against West Brom he had the misfortune to be sent off after 10 minutes for using his elbow and was suspended for three games. In March Mifsud scored five goals for his country’s 7-1 win over Liechtenstein cementing his celebrity reputation on the island where he was voted Sports personality of the year.
