Caludon Castle educated Peter was one of the few ‘Cov kids’ to live the dream and play for the club he had supported as a boy. His debut was a substitute appearance and his full debut came as right-back in a big FA Cup game against Manchester City at Maine Road. He had the unenviable task of marking one of his boyhood heroes Tommy Hutchison. City won 3-1 and although Peter was adjudged to have fouled Trevor Francis for a penalty he acquitted himself well. ‘Chukkie’ as he was nicknamed couldn’t dislodge Thomas from the side but got the occasional game the following season. In the 3-0 Christmas win over Manchester United he scored his first and only goal for the Sky Blues – a 35-yard effort that Gary Bailey fumbled.
When Bobby Gould arrived as manager the following summer Peter was a regular at first but an arthritic knee seriously hampered his career and after eighteen months of operations and treatment he was forced to give up the game. Unknown to many is that he also suffered from a serious bout of meningitis at that time, another factor in his decision to retire.
He played for Nuneaton Borough and Coventry Sporting before becoming a regular for many years with works team GPT where his knee was able to withstand the far less arduous training.
Often seen at the Arena with his son.
