Little is known of William Clayton, except that he had previously held a part-time appointment with Birmingham and came to Highfield Road with excellent references.
During the war he worked for City only on a part-time basis, finding employment in the burgeoning armaments industry in the city to supplement his income. He was an influential figure in getting City into the Midland Section of the Football League in 1918 and became full-time manager during that season.
Both Clayton and the club were out of their depth in the first season of League football and after the club picked up only two points out of the first 22, he resigned.
