It took Ball almost 2 years as a professional before making his League debut, when he made eight consecutive appearances as a right winger, although his best position was inside right. Making no progress, he tried his luck with Colwyn Bay. After a season, he was signed by Bristol Rovers, making 17 appearances before moving across the city to Ashton Gate. He played only 3 games before transferring to Walsall, where he made 123 appearances and scored 23 goals in three and a half seasons. His play was typified by ferocious tackling and he has the distinction of being one of the four ex-City men to appear for the Saddlers in the remarkable 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup in 1933.
