Following a 0-7 reverse at Walsall, the speedy Jim Barnes, was given a try after wholesale team changes were made. He showed his pace but his passing was erratic and he lost his place to "Cute" Herbert. Unable to impress new manager James McIntyre he was sold to Walsall, who were managed by his ex-City boss James Kerr. Showing good wing play, he scored 17 goals in 76 games. This encouraged Watford to invest in his services.
Ironically, he kept Billy Pick out of the Hornets' side, the player that City boss McIntyre chose in preference to Barnes.
