Scotsman Hunter made his League debut for Birmingham in season 1921-22 and was considered to be a good prospect for the future, despite being primarily a reserve. After 5 seasons in the wings, he played 20 matches for the Blues during the

1925-26 season. Although expecting to hold down his place he was pushed back into the reserves, and moved to Grimsby, where he made only 6 appear-ances. After a disappointing start to the season City manager James Kerr bought Hunter, and one of the 2 games he missed before the season's end was the 1-9 drubbing by Millwall. Despite being a versatile left footed player, Hunter didn't figure in the plans of the new manager James McIntyre and teamed up with Kerr at Walsall. After only 10 games, he ended his professional career with 6 appearances for Torquay.
