Son of ex-Scotland and Manchester United's Alec Bell. Billy Bell started at a Coventry Junior club, when his father was City's trainer, before signing for Manchester City as his father moved North. Bell was an unsung player who had been bought by James Kerr but came to prominence under James McIntyre, after playing at Maine Road as a reserve.
He established himself as left half at the start of the 1928-29 season, and only lost his place through injury. His unassuming play was spotted by First Division Portsmouth who signed him, but he played only one game for Pompey before moving to Chester for the club's second season in the League.
