Ward's League career was revived by City. After scoring 6 goals in 21 games for Merthyr Town, he drifted out of League action. He was not a big centre forward, standing at only 5 feet 8 inches. He was sold to Newport County as part of the deal that brought Billy Pick to Highfield Road. He appeared only 6 times for The Ironsides before signing for Barry Town. He was the father of Welsh International Dai Ward, who played for Bristol Rovers and Cardiff City.
