Before World War 2 Fred was understudy to the legendary Raich Carter at Sunderland and was signed for City by Dick Bayliss in July 1946. He scored City’s first post-war goal on his debut in a 1-1 draw at Burnley in the very first post-war league game but after a bright start he lost his place. In September 1948 he joined Lincoln City for £2,000 but his stay at Sincil Bank was short and he later played non-league football for various teams including Spalding United. He died in his hometown of Scunthorpe.
