Like many of his contemporaries, the World War II decimated Ron’s career. He was only 20-years old and a promising footballer with Wyken Pippin FC when war broke. When the hostilities ceased six years later the best years of his playing career were gone, however he was still good enough to attract City’s interest and after impressing in a trial he joined the club as a professional, aged 26.
Ron had spent most of the war as a driver in Egypt for nearly five years and played in a lot of unit football. His City debut came in the second game of the 1946-47 season when he was called into first team action after an injury to George Mason. Over six seasons he was the main understudy to Mason but because of George’s consistent form he played a measly 30 games for the club, occasionally appearing at wing half or right-back. He never let the side down when given an opportunity and when not playing for the first team was a regular in a very good City reserve team. He played for non-league Atherstone Town for two years and worked for Rolls Royce at Ansty for many years.
