George Allon had impressed in the reserves at the start of the 1921-22 season and was pushed into the first team following some poor results. He became a regular for two seasons, but was an enigmatic player. When City were under pressure he could be relied on, being a good defender who was at his best, "when it came to a scrimmage or packing the goal", but when the team were on top he was unable to help with the constructive play of the side. After losing his place, he spent 2 seasons in the reserves, playing only a further 7 games. His last match was the 0-5 thumping by Oldham in February 1925. He went on to make 185 League appearances for Northampton Town before joining Wigan Athletic for the club's inaugural season.
