The former Partick Thistle striker joined the Sky Blues from Leicester in September 1982 in a deal which took Tommy English to Filbert Street. Melrose had a dream start for City, scoring a hat-trick on his home debut, a 4-2 win over Everton. That was to be the high of his brief career at Coventry. The following summer he was one of eight first team players sold and he moved back to Scotland with Celtic.

He was to become a footballer nomad playing for Wolves, Manchester City, Charlton, Leeds and Shrewsbury in the next six years before at the age of 32 stepping down to non-league football with Macclesfield, Curzon Ashton and Halesowen. His best period was probably at Charlton whom he helped win promotion to the old First Division in 1986 and then kept them up the following season. Whilst playing for Shrewsbury he was the victim of an on-field assault by Swindon’s Chris Kamara which saw the aggressor become the first to face legal prosecution for such an act. Since retiring he has worked as a player’s agent and for a time was chief scout at Leicester. It is believed he works in the catering industry as an operations manager.
