Current squad member Marcus is in his second spell at the club; he left in 2002 and returned in 2005 after Micky Adams arrived as manager. A true left-footed full-back he was a product of City’s youth scheme (he played in the same youth team as Willie Boland) and was given his debut by Phil Neal as an 18-year old. After David Burrows’ arrival the following year he only appeared if Burrows was injured and it was only in 2000 that he became the first choice in his favourite position.
He developed into one of the most consistent full-backs outside the Premiership. In 2002 with his contract up he decided to try his luck elsewhere but short spells at Nottingham Forest and Southampton (with Gordon Strachan) were unsatisfying and he joined Stoke. He regained his confidence in the Potteries but when City came back for him he did not hesitate to rejoin his home town club.
