Billy Frith signed the right-winger from Exeter City in the summer of 1960 after it became clear that Johnny Stephens was retiring. A fast, direct wide man, Stiffle is believed to be the first Indian-born to play in the Football League. He learned to play barefoot in India and came to England in 1951, starting his career in the North West with Chester and Altrincham. He moved to Chesterfield in 1954 before a move to Bournemouth the following year. He was a member of Bournemouth’s famous FA Cup giantkilling team in 1957 and the Cherries beat Wolves and Tottenham (he scored one of the goals in a 3-1 win) before going out to Manchester United in the quarter-finals. After a transfer to Exeter in March 1958 he had two good seasons that prompted Frith to sign him.

At Highfield Road he failed to re-create his form and was released in 1961 and promptly emigrated to Australia where he played for Bankstown in New South Wales. He later moved to the Brisbane area but died in 2005.
