Although he spent only one season at Coventry Robbie is a legend for many fans. When Gordon Strachan paid Wolves £6 million for the Irish striker in August 1999 it was a British record for a teenager. A year later City accepted a record £13 million bid from Italian giants Internazionale and he was gone. In between City fans were treated to some magical play from the diminutive Irishman with 12 league goals, 10 of them at Highfield Road. In a memorable debut he scored twice, both trademark cheeky goals but his best goals came in home wins over Aston Villa and Arsenal. With McAllister and Hadji in top form there were chances galore for Robbie and his surprise partner Cedric Roussel. The two hit it off and the team were dubbed the Entertainers by Sky TV. Robbie was one of the hottest properties in the British game and a big move was always likely.

Robbie’s move to Italy was not a success and he was soon back in England with first Leeds, then later with great success to Tottenham. City’s inability to adequately replace Keane and McAllister was a major reason why they were relegated in 2001.
