Sam Shilton
The son of the legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton, Sam, a left sided midfield player, was signed by Gordon Strachan from Plymouth Argyle for a small fee in 1995. At Argyle he had become the youngest ever first team player, under the managership of his father, but was surplus after Peter’s sacking later that year. He made his debut in 1997 but struggled with the pace of Premiership football. Then the following season, following the departure of John Salako, an opportunity presented itself. He had an excellent game at Southend in the League Cup, creating two goals but failed to reproduce the form in the league and was usurped by new signing Steve Froggatt.
Released by City in 1999 he had three good seasons with Hartlepool and a similar period at Kidderminster (then a league club) for whom he played 79 games alongside other ex-City players Sean Flynn and John Williams. Next stop was Burton Albion, followed by two years at Hinckley United and one season at Kettering.Â
