CCFC Player of the Year 1975-76
CCFC Hall of Fame
Scotland, 17 caps, 1 goal
The Scottish winger’s breathtaking ball-control and dazzling dribbling skills consistently enlivened what were, in retrospect, quite dull seasons in the mid-seventies. For seven seasons he was Coventry’s most influential player making 355 appearances for the club and winning 17 full Scottish caps in an era when it was a lot harder to get a game for the Scots than now.
He joined City from Blackpool in 1972 for £140,000 at the same time as fellow Scot Colin Stein and together they did much to transform a previously struggling team into the most attractive City side since the club had entered Division 1. He was not a prolific scorer but when he did score they were normally memorable goals. At Highbury in 1972, he picked up the ball in his own half and beat almost half the Arsenal team before side-stepping the goalkeeper and scoring into an empty net, is considered by those present to be City’s finest in the top flight era. Others that stand out are his two goals in the crucial 1977 relegation match with Bristol City and a stunning 25-yard winner against Liverpool in 1973.
He was a regular for Scotland for two seasons between 1973-75 but in the 1974 World Cup in Germany he was only used as a substitute. Despite outstanding club form for the rest of the 1970s, he was never selected for his country again. In 1977-78 he was the main provider for the legendary Ian Wallace/Mick Ferguson striking partnership and continued to dazzle the fans. City sold him, some say prematurely, to Manchester City in 1980 for £47,000 and six months later he played in the FA Cup Final against Tottenham, where he scored for both sides but ended on the losing side after a replay.
