Ady almost joined Coventry in 1995 when he was at the peak of his powers at Reading but the deal fell through and it was almost ten years later that Peter Reid signed the central defender for the Sky Blues. He had two spells at Reading, making over 200 appearances in the first spell and he was in the side that missed out on promotion to the Premier League in the 1995 play-off final against Bolton. In 1996 he signed for Wolves but injuries restricted his appearances at Molineux and he played only 28 appearances in four seasons before rejoining Reading in 2000. He was an influential player in Reading's return to League One in 2002 and has subsequently been voted the best centre-half in the club's history.

After taking his Reading appearances to over 350 he left to join City in November 2004 to fill the gap left by the sale of Calum Davenport. A tall, imposing defender with excellent positional play, City fans had little chance to appreciate his skills as he was given few opportunities after Micky Adams took over from Reid as manager. At the start of the 2005-06 season he was allowed to go on loan to Millwall but returned to Coventry in early 2006 and put in some excellent performances as the Wise-inspired team shot up the table. In the summer of 2006 he was released and joined Swindon Town where he made 28 appearances over two seasons including two spells as caretaker-manager. He hung up his boots in 2008, Adrian qualified to play for Wales by virtue of his Welsh father and won 13 caps whilst with Reading and Wolves.
