Spotted by Pat Saward playing for Worcestershire Boys. Joined City as apprentice in 1969 after trials with Arsenal & Wolves. Alan was an outstanding teenage striker who starred in City’s FA Youth Cup final team in 1970. After Youth international honours, he helped England win the Little World Cup in the same team as Trevor Francis, he looked set for a big career at the top. The highlight of his City career was scoring a hat-trick against Wolves at Highfield Road in 1976.
Despite being extremely popular with the fans with his explosive running and shooting he was hampered by injuries. The arrival of Ian Wallace meant his career at City was over and in 1979 Alan moved to the USA playing for Washington Diplomats, Jacksonville Teamen and New York Cosmos. He has returned to Worcester and is a regular visitor at the Ricoh.Â
