The Geordie goalkeeper arrived at Highfield Road as a 23-year old and was third choice goalkeeper behind Alf Wood and Peter Taylor. Billy finally got his first-team chance in the 1951-52 relegation season and performed well. The following season he was initially first choice but lost his place to Derek Spencer and left the club to team up with his former City team mate Harry Barratt at Snowdown Colliery in Kent. Later Billy had brief spells with Stockport County and Bedworth Town.
