Affectionately known as ‘Killer’, Kilcline was the first Coventry City captain to hold aloft the FA Cup but his ‘Viking’ looks will be remembered for much more. He joined Notts County as an apprentice and in his first full season he helped County to promotion to Division 1 for the first time in over 50 years and was a major reason why they stayed in Division 1 for the next three seasons. After County were relegated in 1984 Bobby Gould signed the big centre-half for £60,000 and he forged a partnership with Trevor Peake that was the cornerstone of City’s defence for almost seven years. He had a reputation for being hard and lacking the finer skills but he became an outstanding skipper and developed a talent for set-piece goals. His goals direct from free-kicks against Southampton in 1987 and Crystal Palace in 1991 were memorable, not to mention his goal in 1985 in the vital home game with Luton. His penalty record was excellent, until 1989-90 when he missed several and retired from the job. His most vital spot-kick was the last minute winner against Arsenal in their Championship season of 1988-89, after he had missed one earlier in the game.
He had some problems off the pitch, but on it his inspirational style made him a big City favourite. After Terry Butcher’s arrival in 1990 he was rarely in favour and joined Oldham in 1991. Nine months later he joined Kevin Keegan’s revolution at Newcastle and helped them avoid relegation to Division 3. A spell at Swindon in their only season in the Premier League was followed with two seasons at Mansfield. In 1997-98 he helped Halifax win the Conference and subsequently joined Altrincham.
