At the age of 16, Wilson made his League debut in what was one of the most difficult sides to break into, WBA. It took some time for him to settle, but he soon started scoring regulary. His ability was to score the unexpected goal. He was signed by Sheffield Wednesday and was converted to a left half. He was a fringe player in Wednesday's consecutive championship winning sides of 1928-29 and 1929-30. He was signed by Harry Storer from Villa's reserves and was cover for Citys exciting forwards.

He lasted 12 months before entering non-League football. He played throughout the War and retired at the age of 42.
