Birtley was signed in June 1934 having failed to make the first team at Everton. He scored on his debut and provided good service for his forwards, but manager Storer was looking for a winger who could offer better service and more goals. He found his man in George McNestry and Birtley was sold to Crystal Palace, where he scored 16 goals in 69 games, before returning to his native North East with Gateshead in the summer of 1939.
