Jim Liddle was an ex-miner and professional sprinter who had failed to make the grade at QPR, Huddersfield and Newcastle, before signing for Gillingham. His 17 goals in 79 League games enticed Harry Storer to sign him. He shared the outside left duties with Arthur Fitton and was sold to Exeter City in the summer of 1937, where he stayed until the outbreak of the war.
