Bill Morgan was a highly regarded keeper, whose career was cruelly ended by the War and a shoulder injury. He had made his debut as a replacement for Peter McSevich at the age of 18. He had impressed Harry Storer whilst playing in the North-east, and his manager was prepared to be patient with his find. It wasn't until March 1936 that he made the keeper's jersey his own. From then up to the war, he missed only 2 games and helped City to the brink of Division 1. At the outbreak of war, Morgan joined the local fire service (an essential function for a city so vulnerable to air attack). He continued to play for City and guested for Nottingham Forest and Leicester City.

It was at Filbert Street that he ended his career, when, on September 26th 1942, he dislocated his shoulder in the 0-0 draw against Leicester. Despite 18 months recu-peration, he took medical advice and retired. He continued at the club, coaching the nursery team, Modern Machines, and later the first team, before working at Standard Triumph.
