Signed by Harry Storer, Jackie Brown was seen as the replacement for the injured George McNestry. He had scored 7 goals in 31 League Cup games at Molineux under Major Frank Buckley and proved to be a valuable capture for only £3,000. Whilst at City he was leading scorer for two consecutive seasons and played in six internationals, four for Northern Ireland and two for the Republic of Ireland. He was a quite a character and was sold to 1st Division Birmingham in September 1938 following an unfortunate incident in a Coventry ball-room. He couldn't help the Blues stay up and the War interrupted his career. He was playing for non-league Barry Town when peace time football resumed. In May 1948 he signed for Ipswich and scored 27 goals in 103 matches before retiring aged 36 in June 1951.
