Experienced Scotsman MacDonald, was bought to give some knowledge of 2nd Division football to City's forward line, having earlier played 27 games for Manchester United. The blond schemer started well, forming a partnership with Clarrie Bourton and Les Jones.

He lost his way in 1939 and was replaced by Ellis Lager. With Storer looking to gain transfer income, MacDonald was sold to Plymouth as George Lowrie arrived at City. MacDonald retired after only 12 months at Home Park.
