Jack Archer was a stylish left half from Everton, where he played only 15 first team games in 5 years. On his return to the Midlands he played in City's side that was close to gaining promotion to Division 1 for the first time. He established a fine partnership with left back Walter Metcalf, but lost his place to Harry Boileau and was sold to Plymouth. At the outbreak of the war, he joined the RAF, but broke his leg in a match against the Army. It took 18 months to heal and after a few guest appearances for Hull City, Luton Town and Tranmere Rovers, he retired from football and returned to work in Coventry.
