Clarrie was an exciting prospect with non-league Margate when City signed him as an 18-year old in the summer of 1938. The war took the best years of the left-winger’s playing career and he made one appearance whilst on leave in 1942. After the hostilities he was a regular in the reserves for one season. The form of Emilio Aldecoa and George Ashall on the left flank meant it was hard for him to break into the first team and his single appearance came in a 1-1 home draw with Manchester City in March 1947. A month later Clarrie broke his leg in a reserve game at Northampton and retired after complications set in. It is believed he died some years ago.
