Dennis was on Swansea’s books as a teenager and Harry Storer signed him for City in 1937 from Redditch Town as a promising full back. He failed to win a first team place before hostilities started in 1939. He was one of the oldest City debutants ever when, two weeks short of his 29th birthday he played at right back against West Brom in September 1946. He played 17 games that season vying for the right back spot with Charlie Elliott and Billy Frith in a side that finished eighth in Division Two.

The following season he played 15 games at right or left back and his final four games in 1948-49 when his opportunities were limited by the consistency of players such as Harry Barratt and Dick Mason. An injury forced him to retire in the summer of 1949 after 36 games without ever scoring. During the war he played as a guest for Darlington playing 29 games in 1943-44 and Worcester City. He had a brother who was on Arsenal’s books after the war and also played for Lockheed Leamington.
