The son of former Coventry manager Gordon Strachan, Gavin was signed soon after his father arrived at Coventry in 1995. Gavin had been an apprentice at Leeds, his father’s former club. His break came in 1997-98 and after a handful of substitute appearances he made his first start at Villa Park in the famous 1-0 victory, helping set up Moldovan’s winning goal. City however had a glut of good midfield players and the form of George Boateng, Gary McAllister and later Youssef Chippo and John Eustace meant Gavin’s opportunities were limited.

He spent time on loan at Dundee, Motherwell and Peterborough but in 2003 Gavin departed for Southend. Since then he has had mixed fortunes at Hartlepool, Peterborough (again) and Notts County.
