Graham Newton
In February 1964 with City’s Third Division promotion campaign stuttering Jimmy Hill signed the forward for £8,000 from Walsall to pep up the attack. Newton replaced Jimmy Whitehouse but couldn’t get City back to winning ways; it took the signing of George Kirby and John Smith a month later to turn the tide. Of Newton’s eight games only one ended in victory but he did notch goals at Wrexham and in the home games against Bournemouth and Oldham.
The following season he played once – a League Cup game against Ipswich and three months later signed for Bournemouth. In three seasons he played 28 games and was converted to a wing-half. In 1967 he went to USA becoming one of the first Englishmen to play in the NASL and helping Atlanta Chiefs win the 1968 Soccer Bowl. After returning to England he had spells with Reading, Port Vale, Hednesford, Stourbridge and Worcester City before becoming involved in International Soccer Camps.
