Wright started before the Great War with Derby County, and played 15 times in 2 seasons, including 3 in their promotion season of 1911-12. He joined Portsmouth in August 1912 and played 27 times for the Southern League side.

He was signed by William Clayton in September 1919, to add experience to City's struggling side, and had the dubious distinction of playing 10 games for City during which the club didn't score a single goal. He made 1 appearance for Chesterfield in 1921-22.
