Lol joined City from West Brom, where he had been a reserve for six years, in 1938. With outstanding wingers George Ashall and George Taylor in front of him he got few chances but did score in City’s last peace-time game before WWII, a 3-1 win at Luton. During the war he was in the RAF and was awarded the DFC and managed to play as a guest player for Wrexham, Forest, Notts County and Stockport. After the war Coen had converted to left-back but was still unable to become a regular because of the form of Dick Mason. After being released by City in 1948 he drifted into non-league football with South Liverpool and Dudley Town.
