A popular fierce-tackling central defender signed from Crewe for £120,000 by John Sillett in June 1989, Billing had been on Everton’s books and made one first team appearance. At Crewe he played alongside future internationals David Platt and Geoff Thomas and helped Dario Gradi’s team to promotion out of Division Four. His appearances at City were limited by the form of Peake and Kilcline and he normally appeared when one of them was injured. He joined Port Vale on loan in 1993 and joined them permanently soon afterwards. He later played for Hartlepool, Crewe again, Northwich and Witton Albion.
